Christmas trees are a renewable resource and we only buy our trees from suppliers that we know take a ‘green’ approach to their production. Real Christmas trees are good for the environment. See below for tips on choosing and caring for your tree.

Choosing a Tree for Your Home

Measure the height and width of the area where the tree will be displayed. Cultivated Christmas trees tend to have an 80% taper. This means that a tree that is 2 meters tall will be approximately 1.6 meters wide (7′ tall will be 5’6″ wide) at the bottom. Also give consideration to your decorating style. Some species of Christmas trees have more open foliage, stiffer branches or longer needles.

Caring for Your Christmas Tree

1. When buying your tree, conduct a freshness test. Grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it towards you. If the tree is fresh, no more than 5-10 needles should come off in your hand; more needles may come off in colder dryer conditions – this is normalloading Christmas tree

2. Store the tree in a cool place, out of the wind and rain, until it is ready to be brought indoors.

3. Ideally your tree stand should be large enough to hold four litres (one gallon) of water as well as the trunk of the tree. If this is not possible due to the kind of stand that you have, make sure you top up your tree water every day. This will ensure that your tree does not dry out prematurely. Your tree will drink several litres of water every day for the first week or two.

4. When bringing the tree indoors, cut 1-2 cm (1/2 to 3/4 of an inch) off the tree stump (or have us cut it for you) before placing it in water. The cut must be no more than four hours old; otherwise sap will seal the cut. This prevents the water from rising up thus drying out the tree.

5. The first water fill should be with very warm water enabling the sap to flow readily. As the tree Loading Christmas Tree on Vehiclethaws, water will be drawn upwards replenishing the moisture to the extremities. No additives are required.

6. When it comes time to dispose of your tree, remember that it is 100% reusable and recyclable. Most cities have local charities or clubs that will be only too happy to shred your tree for a small donation.

Don’t forget that if you have any questions about Christmas trees, drop by or give us a call. We will be happy to help.
